Why Does Delivery Take so Long?
At holos foods, we're determined to take a holistic approach to business. This means thinking about the broader, longer term impact of the way that we supply products, and wherever possible finding answers that reduce the impact of our business and of our Customers purchases.
One way that we do this is to improve the efficiency of our supply chain by eliminating waste. As well as selling products off the shelf like a traditional shop, we offer many products on a special order basis. We have scheduled daily deliveries from our suppliers, so most special order products are ready for despatch within 48 hours along with the rest of your off the shelf order. This has a number of advantages:
- Unlike having lots of small, frequent deliveries, we have large, scheduled deliveries, reducing the emissions created within our supply chain (less lorries, but each one is full!).
- Fewer items become short dated or go to waste.
- Stock is fresh and doesn't sit about in a warehouse or stockroom before reaching the Customer.
- Because we're not tied to selling only the products we have on the shelf, we can offer our Customers a much broader range.
- The financial benefits of this approach mean that we can offer the fairest, most competetive pricing to our customers on the exact products they want. This is why we are cheaper than our competition on almost all of the products we sell!
We also operate the same approach between ourselves and the Customer - because your postman comes to your door almost every day already, regular post is one of the most efficient ways of handling small orders.
In some areas, we also offer free deliveries using a "Milk Round" system, where our van visits each area once or twice a week, fully loaded with our Customers' goods. Regular Supermarket delivery vans travel much further, because they emphasise conveninence over efficiency, we cover less distance because we can concentrate the number of deliveries we make in one area at one time... we consider ourselves to be the tortoise to big supermarkets' hare!
The disadvantage is that our Customers have to wait a little longer between placing an order, and receiving their goods. We believe that by encouraging our Customers to adopt a more considered approach to the way they shop we are helping them take a step away from the "I want it now" culture that has become so widespread in our society. We hope that one day everyone will shop this way.
